The American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) is dedicated to preserving American wild horses and burros in viable free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage. Our goal is to protect America’s wild horses and burros by stopping the federal government’s systematic elimination of these national icons from our public lands. It’s not too late to act to save the mustangs!

The ASPCA is dedicated to ensuring equines nationwide live good lives. To that end, we’re developing innovative programs and partnerships with the equine welfare community, as well as equine industries, to help at-risk, abused or neglected horses, and horses in transition. Our efforts to protect equines focus on three main areas: helping horses find homes, keeping horses safe, and combating cruelty and responding to crises

From the Kill Pen is an exploration of the criminal activity behind the underground horse slaughter industry in America. With candid interviews, whistleblower footage and underground video, the film investigates how and why unregulated horse meat is getting into the human food chain. The film examines the risks of consumption and the powerful political and economic forces that encourage the practice.

Dutch immigrant Harry deLeyer journeyed to the United States after World War II and developed a transformative relationship with a broken-down Amish plow horse he rescued off a slaughter truck bound for the glue factory. Harry paid eighty dollars for the horse and named him Snowman. In less than two years, Harry & Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nation’s bluebloods. They became famous and traveled around the world together. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and ignited a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Eighty-six-year-old Harry tells their Cinderella love story firsthand.

The Homes for Horses Coalition is a national coalition dedicated to increasing collaboration, professionalism and growth in the equine rescue and protection community. Our members are committed to ending horse slaughter and all other forms of equine abuse.
The coalition is a joint initiative of the Animal Welfare Institute, the ASPCA and The Humane Society of the United States. We currently have more than 440 members representing horse rescue and sanctuary throughout the U.S. and beyond.

We think big. We are fearless. We stand up and fight for all animals who are suffering. Together, we can create a more humane society.

It explains how to find a reputable rescue to donate to or to adopt a horse. Ms. Jacques also details the process of purchasing a horse from a killpen or at an auction. And, for those who want to dive in fully, she provides details on how to start your own 501c3 horse rescue organization.
